I love these Harmony remotes, and when I can get one for under a buck I am happy as a clam. Too bad I just bought one of these units a couple of months ago; that one was still less than retail, but not as good as today’s price.

I’ve been using the same Harmony One for 10 years now. Other than needing a battery replacement when the original swelled up, it has been fine. I am so used to it, I don’t want to change to anything else.

I’m on my 3rd harmony remote.
My 360 was replaced when some buttons stopped working.
My 650 was replaced when buttons stopped working, I ordered my ultimate home when the power button gave up.
I would of never replaced the 650 if the buttons didn’t go.

I love these things. I pick up lots of interesting equipment at the Goodwill Outlet, and 95% of it comes without remotes. I think I’ve been able to get just about everything functional using these Harmony remotes; HD tuners, HDMI switches, Blu-ray players, etc.

Can you program your vcr with that?
Did I just date myself?

Probably, but I still have the remotes for my VCRs.
It probably wouldn’t work with my favorite VCR from way back, the Panasonic PV-4761. That unit had a separate laser remote and a plastic sheet with barcodes, and you just scanned and then beamed the programming right to the VCR - so simple.
That was a great unit, and I ran it until it died. Mic inputs and VU meters were unusual, but so useful for a number of projects I did when I worked for an orchestra. Later I needed much more gear to do what that VCR did by itself.

I liked Harmony remotes but pretty much gave up on them after the plastic on all of mine started melting and being sticky after less than a year.

Hmm, haven't had that happen to me - yet. Hopefully I can avoid it. I've had my oldest one for about 4 years now and it seems to be holding up fine so far.

Might just have been the models I had. I still have one in a plastic bin in the garage because I’m an electronics pack rat. I found it the other day while looking for a composite video cable and put some batteries in and it seems to work but man it was gooey. I think a similar soft touch plastic was in wide use in the late 2000s - I found a Kensington mouse in there that was melting in a similar way that I ended up just throwing out.

I know the problem that you’re describing. I have the same problem with hoarding old electronics, and it’s come in quite handy when resuscitating old devices; I once used the hard drive from an old GPS to build a working iPod, amongst other Frankenstein devices.
I usually scrape off that sticky plastic/rubber coating and just li ve with the hard plastic underneath. One of my favorite devices is a dock and monitor combo for a 5G iPod video. The coating came off fairly easily and the resulting unit looks OK, not great but acceptable.
